“The Eagles of Lisbon” Sport Lisboa e Benfica is the greatest Portuguese club of all-time with the most number of League titles, Cup trophies, the first place in Portuguese all-time table and the most successful Portuguese club in European competition. The club was found during a meeting in the southwest part of Lisbon involving 24 young men, led by Cosme Damião. Benfica was one of the founding members of the Portuguese Liga in 1933. Benfica became a top club in Portugal in the 1940s to the 1950s before the era of Eusebio was created. In the 1960s, Benfica was one of the best clubs in the World, reaching European Cup final for five times, and won seven Portuguese champions in that decade and went on domination until the middle 1970s. In 1972–73, Benfica won the Portuguese Liga without any defeat (28 wins and 2 draws) and was secondly seasonal unbeaten in its history achieved the 1977 - 1978. The darkest era of 8 seasons between 1996 to 2003, is the longest period the club cannot win any title with its lowest place ever is 6th in 2001. In overall history, Benfica has ever finished below third place just 7 times and holds the Portuguese record longest unbeaten with 56 between 1976 and 1978 and holds the European record most consecutive wins in domestic league with 29 games between 1971 - 1973 and holds the record most goal difference in a Portuguese Liga season with 88 in the 1972 - 1973 season. The club also holds the record lowest goal conceding ratio (0.11) and highest clean sheet ratio (0.88) in a single international club season. Benfica's the greatest season ever is the 1964 - 1965 which it appeared in all major treble finalists and finally won just a league title. The club incredibly lost in all consecutive 8 European competition finalists since Guttmann's era.
