Liverpool are the dominant team for the 2019 UEFA 'team of the year', selected by online users, with only Lionel Messi and De Jong representing LaLiga among the eleven selected players.

Real Madrid are paying the price for their poor season after being knocked out in the round of 16 in the 2018-19 Champions League campaign with zero players from the Santiago Bernabeu squad selected in 'Team of the Year' ''.

The complete XI features: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, De Ligt, Van dijk, Robertson; De Bruyne, De Jong; Messi, Cristiano, Lewandowski and Mané. There is no place in the line-up for players like Salah, Mbappé, Hazard or Firmino.

More than 2 million online users voted in the survey on the basis of their performance from January to December 2019, with performance in UEFA competitions having a higher weight in the assessment.

The 2019 XI saw seven players make their debuts for the squad, six of them from English Premier League clubs, including five from Liverpool FC, the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League winner. This includes UEFA Men's Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk, who won the UEFA Champions League with his club and also reached the UEFA Nations League final with the Netherlands.
